I was in "the worlds only Airborne Armor unit", 4th Bn (Lt.)(Abn.), 68th Armor, part of the 82d Airborne Division at that time. We wrer on alert for some time and then started to deploy, when the Soviets started to cut back on supply shipments and switched to deploy their airborne. There was talk of possible theater nuclear operations. Ultimately the deployment was stopped with cessatoon of the war. Sovets advocated "joint peace keepimg" which US rejected. They wanted to get an entry/ foothold in the region which they ultimately got. The 82d Div. Commander issued a vaugely written letter to the troops thanking them for their efforts and response, but not particularly clear about what for! I still have that letter.
