Ah, how we recall that. Gas was 25 cents a gallon. Back then -it seems a hundred years ago- I did translations. It was for authors, editors, journalists... Just before the gas crunch entered the picture I was sitting in a cafe and told what I thought was astounding; mainly, Arabia had only one defense -oil. Next thing I knew, gas ventured into the incredible realm of a buck a gallon. On TV lines seem to be the proverbial one mile long.

Little did we ever imagine that the continued strife would escalate as it has over the years. Back then, I was friends with an Israeli. Hellova a nice guy. In fact, I lent him $5,000. Anyways, he used to go into scenarios about why a couple million Israelis resettled in the US. It was becuz America was the land of opportunity, but (also) it had two oceans protecting it. My beloved grandfather, like me, was a PoliSci aficionado and he'd say something similar;mainly we were blessed having two oceans.

Anyways, my zydowski (J) pal's ideology was that becuz of the treatment of the Palestinians, that eventually another power in the region would have the nuke. According to him, it was inevitable and only a question of time. He believed that it would be the cause for nuclear confrontation among nations. He thought that most of the globe would be destroyed. However, America, the land of miracles, would have pockets where civilization would survive.
