The USS America launched attack aircraft with nuclear bombs headed for Cairo when we thought it was Egypt that had attacked. It could have been part of a plan by LBJ to get us into the war. Too much to go into here. The planes were recalled 6 minutes from target. In his book, "Operation Cyanide", Peter Hounam detailed an interview with a USAF B-52 pilot that said he and other crews were rousted from bed and took the active runway at Beale AFB, in California at least an hour prior to the Liberty being attacked. The cockpit had sealed orders and the planes had nukes on board. You can buy the book or read it at archive.org, only a couple of hundred pages. Hounam went to Russia and interviewed a Russian general who stated that they were prepared to nuke Tel Aviv if we nuked Cairo.
