Alcohol and Tobacco lobbyists in the '60s wanted marijuana illegal because pre-teens and teenagers were smoking weed, rather than smoking cigs and drinking. '70s saw weed take over as acid was fading, and in response lobbyists doubled down, believing that prosecuting marijuana would coerce their target groups to smoke cigs and drink. Instead, the end of the 70s and early 80s saw the proliferation of cocaine, which could be cut with toxic fillers for a cheap high. Hard drugs are addictive, just as cigs were designed to be, but usually people don't carjack to pay for cigs. Lobbyists doubled down again, and the country's youth was lost to highly addictive and toxic drug.
Legalizing marijuana throughout the US can't come fast enough.
The price of hard drugs will collapse--20% or less of current prices--and the drug trade throughout Central America will be minor.
Great post.
