I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and at that time our Congressman was Steve Solarz who became a family friend, great guy. He was one of the first people when I was still a little kid to tell me I should go to Brandeis U (which I did in 1977). Schumer was in the NY State Assembly and was very ambitious. To our surprise, Steve chose not to run again and not long after got cancer and passed away. Schumer took his seat and then moved onto the Senate. Schumer has been there ever since.
I always wondered at how convenient what happened to Solarz was for Schumer.
For al long time, NY State and City was one of those places like Massachusetts where Dems and Reps alike were elected Governors, Mayors, to the State Leg and Assembly and to Congress.
