My Ukrainian grandfather, whom I never met, b. 1869 in Kharkov, was a veterinarian/bacteriologist in Russia, then USSR. He studied cattle plague, anthrax, on a field station he set up in Chita, Siberia, a town on the Trans-Siberian RR, not far from the Chinese border.
He was helped in his work by his wife, my grandmother, who had studied microbiology in Berlin after schooling in St Petersburg at the Smolny Institute, founded by Catherine the Great. (Her father was a colonel in the Russian Army.) I have a photo of Babushka seated beside a large microscope! My grandfather was eventually ennobled by the Mongolian government for his work helping the Buriat nomadic people, who were reliant on their animals for their way of life. He assumed as a political liberal that the Russian Revolution would not affect his important work, but he was wrong about that; arrested in 1932 and died in a Siberian camp. I read that he was "rehabilitated" by the Soviets in the 1960s, I think at the death of Krushchev. It gave me chills to read Roger's report, especially seeing that Kharkov figures large in it. My grandfather attended the university there and many of his relatives were prominent in various medical fields in the city. BTW my mother, born in Chita in 1902, would call Ukraine "Small Russia", which is how it was thought of, back in the day.
