He’s been terrific , but blew it on his extreme, terribly unfair abortion ban. Six weeks is such a ridiculous imposition. There are so many women who are unaware of a pregnancy at that stage. Irregular menstrual cycles, light cycles.. and it doesn’t always result from carelessness. I was 10 weeks, never missed a pill, hadn’t gained an ounce, no morning sickness.. I found out during a routine yearly exam. I had just turned 22. Fortunately, I was married and had my mother and grandmother to lean on. Others aren’t so fortunate.

When he was asked why he made such a decision( on a Friday in the middle of the night), that it was so unpopular and Floridians were furious- they weren’t even given the opportunity to be heard.. DeSantis flippantly replied,” Because it aligns with my beliefs”. Apparently, he doesn’t realize America isn’t a theocracy. Yet.

Florida had a 24 week parameter when he took office. We’ve had Republican Kirk,Martinez, Bush,Crist, Rick Scott…None of them messed with it. I don’t know anybody who went beyond 18 weeks unless a doctor found something untenable.

First DeSantis cut it to 15 weeks without putting it before the people. There was kicking and screaming, but they let it go because he was exceptional on most every other issue. He had a large Dem voting base. It was done, people moved on and he had a Super PAC drafting him for 2024. And out of the clear blue, boom, he signs the Heartbeat Bill, initially without exceptions for rape and incest. This time, it wasn’t only the Dems and a small group of Republicans who were outraged, it was 85% of Floridians, including devout, Pro-Life Catholics. He dug his heels in deeper. Refused to allow a ballot initiative, stating that it would codify abortion on demand all the way to delivery. It wasn’t true. The Super PAC dumped him. It was started by Ed Rollins and had the heavy hitters- Langone, Marcus, Steve Schwartzman,Cleveland Clinic,Baptist Medical, the School Boards, every major retailer.. his Covid policies were a blessing. He ever had, of all people, Bill Maher backing him. And in one fell swoop, he was DOA.
